Dictation for programmers

Short answer

Programmers get the most from dictation not by speaking code, but by speaking everything around it: prompts for AI coding assistants, pull-request descriptions, review comments, commit messages, docs and tickets. With F5Type you press one key in Cursor, VS Code, a JetBrains IDE or the terminal, explain what you want out loud, and get clean text at your cursor. The Command style shapes it as an instruction, and your dictionary keeps library names right.

Why would a developer dictate?

A growing share of a developer’s writing is not code. It is natural language: explaining a bug to an AI assistant, describing a change for reviewers, writing the commit message, answering a question in Slack, documenting a decision. That writing is often the part people rush, because typing paragraphs feels slow compared with thinking them. Speaking them takes a fraction of the effort, and you naturally include the context that a terse typed version leaves out.

What should I dictate, and what should I type?

TaskDictate or type?Why
Prompt for an AI coding assistantDictateLong context is easy to say and tedious to type
Pull-request descriptionDictateYou explain the change as you would to a reviewer
Commit messageDictateOne short sentence, said in seconds
Docs, READMEs, ADRsDictateFirst drafts flow faster by voice
Code commentsEitherDictate the explanation; type the tags
Code itselfTypeSymbols and indentation are awkward to speak

How do I dictate a prompt in Cursor or VS Code?

  1. 1Click into the chat or prompt box of your AI assistant.
  2. 2Press your F5Type shortcut.
  3. 3Explain the task the way you would to a colleague: what is wrong, what you tried, what you want, which files matter.
  4. 4Press the shortcut again. Clean text appears in the box (on a Mac, press ⌘V).
  5. 5Add any file references or code snippets by hand and send.

Try the Command style for prompts — it shapes what you say into a direct instruction. Save a Custom style if you always want the same structure, such as "context, task, constraints".

What if F5 is my debugger key?

In many IDEs F5 starts or continues debugging. Change F5Type’s shortcut in Settings → Hotkey → Change shortcut to something your IDE does not use. On Windows the default is already Ctrl+Shift+Space. See How to set a dictation hotkey.

How do I keep technical words correct?

  • Add library, framework and service names to your F5Type dictionary — including your team’s internal codenames.
  • Add acronyms in the form you want them written.
  • Save snippets for text you paste often: a PR checklist line, a ticket template sentence, a standard review comment.

Will it mess up the code in my editor?

No. F5Type inserts at the cursor and never uses Select All or Delete, so it cannot wipe a file. If an editor or terminal blocks typing from other apps, the text is copied to your clipboard and saved to your history instead.

Does it work in the terminal?

Yes — anywhere you can type or paste. It is handy for writing commit messages and for prompting command-line AI tools. On Windows, a terminal run as administrator blocks typing from other apps; F5Type copies the text so you can press Ctrl+V.

Is it safe to dictate about proprietary code?

F5Type does not use your recordings or transcripts to train AI models, and audio is saved on your device before upload. On Mac and Windows you can also transcribe offline. Check your company’s policy on AI tools first. See Private dictation.

What is a good daily workflow?

  • Morning: dictate your stand-up update with the Summary style.
  • While coding: dictate prompts and explanations; type the code.
  • Before pushing: dictate the commit message and PR description.
  • In review: dictate comments — explaining "why" is quicker by voice.
  • After meetings: dictate Action Items into the ticket.
