How to set a dictation hotkey (F5)
In F5Type the dictation hotkey is F5 on a Mac and Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows, and you can change it in Settings → Hotkey → Change shortcut. If F5 on your Mac changes brightness, volume or opens Apple Dictation, press Fn+F5 or pick another key. Press once to start and again to stop, or switch to hold-to-talk in Settings → General → Recording mode.

Why use a single hotkey for dictation?
Dictation only becomes a habit when starting it costs nothing. If you have to open an app, find a button or reach for the mouse, you will type instead. A single key that works in every app — press, speak, press — removes that friction. It is also why F5Type is named after its key.
Why F5?
- It is easy to find without looking — top row, middle of the keyboard.
- Few apps rely on it for something you do while typing text.
- One key is faster than a three-key chord when you dictate dozens of times a day.
It is not perfect for everyone: on laptops the function row often doubles as media keys, and some developers use F5 to run or debug. That is why the shortcut is fully changeable.
How do I set the hotkey on a Mac?
- 1Open F5Type → Settings → Hotkey.
- 2Choose Change shortcut and press the key or combination you want.
- 3Test it: click into a text field, press the key, say a sentence, press it again, then press ⌘V.
If F5 dims the screen, changes the volume or starts Apple Dictation, your Mac is treating the top row as special keys. Either press Fn+F5, or turn on "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in System Settings → Keyboard, or pick a different shortcut in F5Type.
How do I set the hotkey on Windows?
- 1Open F5Type → Settings → Hotkey → Change shortcut.
- 2Press the combination you want — for example F5 on a desktop keyboard.
- 3Test it in any app: press, speak, press. The text is typed at your cursor.
The Windows default is Ctrl+Shift+Space because most laptop function keys need Fn. If you switch to F5 on a laptop, you will probably press Fn+F5. Some laptops have an Fn Lock key that makes the top row act as F1–F12 by default.
Should I press or hold to talk?
- Press (default): press once to start, once to stop. Best for longer dictation, where holding a key is tiring.
- Hold: hold the key while you speak, release to finish. Best for quick replies — like a walkie-talkie.
Switch in Settings → General → Recording mode. Whichever you choose, a dictation on a computer stops by itself at the time limit — 15 minutes by default, or 5 or 10 if you prefer.
What makes a good dictation shortcut?
- Reachable without looking or moving your hand far.
- Not used by the apps you work in — check your IDE, browser and design tools.
- Hard to press by accident.
- Comfortable to press many times a day, especially if you have sore wrists — see dictation for RSI and accessibility.
How do I dictate without a hotkey on my phone?
Phones do not have function keys, so F5Type uses a keyboard instead. Add the F5Type keyboard on iPhone or Android, switch to it in any app and tap to dictate. See the iPhone and Android guide.
The shortcut does nothing — what now?
- Make sure F5Type is running. On Windows it stays in the system tray after you close its window.
- On a Mac, try Fn+F5.
- Check the microphone permission — see permissions.
- Pick a different shortcut in case another app has claimed it.
