Voice typing in multiple languages

Short answer

To voice type in several languages, use a dictation tool that detects the language you are speaking. F5Type does this automatically: press your shortcut and speak English, Spanish, German or another language, and it writes in that language — cleaned up, with punctuation fixed. If detection picks the wrong language, choose one in Settings. Built-in tools like Apple Dictation and Win+H usually need you to switch the language by hand.

Can I dictate in more than one language?

Yes. Many people write in two or three languages every day — English at work, another language with family, a third with a client. A dictation tool should follow you without a trip to Settings each time. F5Type detects the language you are speaking for each dictation, so you can reply to one message in English and the next in Portuguese with the same key.

How does automatic language detection work in F5Type?

  1. 1Click into a text field and press your shortcut — F5 on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows.
  2. 2Speak in the language you want to write in.
  3. 3Press the shortcut again. F5Type recognises the language and writes the cleaned-up text in it.

The cleanup — removing filler words, fixing grammar and punctuation, applying an output style such as Email or Message — happens in the same language you spoke.

When should I pick the language manually?

  • Very short dictations — a word or two gives detection little to go on.
  • Languages that sound similar, where detection may guess the neighbour.
  • Strong accents in a second language, where the sound of your first language comes through.
  • Noisy surroundings.

In those cases, set the language in F5Type’s Settings. Switch it back to automatic when you are done.

Can I mix two languages in one sentence?

Mixing is how many bilingual people actually speak — an English product name inside a French sentence, for example. Short borrowed words and names usually come through well, especially if you add them to your F5Type dictionary. Long switches between languages in the middle of one dictation are harder for any speech recogniser; for best results, keep one dictation to one main language.

How do the built-in options handle languages?

  • Apple Dictation (Mac, iPhone): you add languages in Settings and switch between them; many work on the device.
  • Windows Voice Typing (Win+H): uses the language you have selected and generally needs online speech recognition.
  • F5Type: detects the language automatically on each dictation, with a manual override.

How do I get the best accuracy in a second language?

  • Use a headset or a decent microphone and keep it at a steady distance.
  • Speak in full sentences rather than single words; context helps recognition.
  • Add names, places and technical terms to your dictionary.
  • Pick the Clean style when you want your exact wording, tidied.
  • Read the result once before sending — especially for formal messages.

Does it help if English is not my first language?

Yes. Cleanup fixes grammar and punctuation, and the Email and Message styles give your text a natural shape, so what you send reads as finished text. See dictation for non-native speakers.

Does it work offline in other languages?

Recording always works offline, and your audio is saved on your device. On a Mac, offline dictation uses the speech recognition built into macOS, so language support follows what your Mac has installed. On Windows, the optional offline mode downloads a speech model once. The AI cleanup runs once you are online again. See Working offline.
